collecting firewood in California

• California National Parks [NPS] will not allow you to cut firewood or even gather down wood. You must bring your own firewood or buy theirs. ($$$)
• California State Parks [CA SP] usually do not allow you to cut trees or gather down wood. Bring your own or check with rangers for specifics.
• California National Forests [USFS] allow cutting of wood with a permit in posted areas. Campers can usually collect down wood unless otherwise posted. If you're headed to the Sierra Nevada Mountains (the very best place to find free firewood BTW) make sure you find secluded, FREE camping sites with a real map of your desired California National Forests. For building campfires at camp, you will need a campfire permit from the local ranger station.
• California Bureau of Land Management [BLM] Most camping areas are found in desert regions, which tend to be pretty lax about campfire restrictions. Forested areas of the state managed by BLM tend to be strict on camping only in developed campgrounds, if you need to have a campfire.
