Van Winkle & Granite Mountains - 20 million-year-old
volcanic rocks cap the Van Winkles, right off Interstate 40. From SoCal, drive I-40 Eastbound to Kelbaker Rd exit, turn north & go 5 mi.-10
miles. Look to the left for dirt roads leading into boulder camps. Located inside Mojave National
Preserve, this area serves as a perfect spot for overnight
stops east bound off Interstate 40 - on your way to the Grand
Cyn, Flagstaff, Phoenix or Santa Fe NM. BLM
lands border the Mojave National
Preserve.
6 mi. N - Turn right on dirt Hidden Hills Road
& start exploring the back roads. SUV with high clearance
is advised. There are tons of great views all over. & a perfect
area for stargazing.
8 mi. N - Turn left at a number of dirt roads
near Granite Pass, & explore the billion boulders. Most dirt
roads are suitable for passenger cars or small motorhomes, but
dirve slowly. Great primitive camping all over, near the base
of the boulders. Rock climbing, mountain biking, boulder hopping.
