Journey | Winter | Winter-Loops
death.valley
- Randsburg is
a small rustic town in the Mojave Desert, which to most, resembles
a ghost town. Antique shops, a general store and saloon are among
the few businesses in town. This place is perfect for a stop
over on the way to Death Valley. Randsburg
is located just of Hwy.395 near the Hwy.14 junction (off Redrock-Randsburg
Rd.)
- Take the east exit out of town and head south on Hwy.395 for 1 mile.Take the red-paved Trona Rd. heading northeast. Right on Hwy. 178, Make sure to take the side trip out to the Trona Pinnacles. This rough dirt road can be driven by passenger car very slowly. (but not while wet) Contining on past the small community of Trona, the winding highway decends into the awsome Panamint Valley. Once on the valley floor, Balarat ghost town is on the right side.
- Back on the highway, take the backway into Death Valley NP (right fork) with Wildrose Rd. Stovepipe Wells on Hwy. 190 is the best bet for lodging in the National Park. Take day trips over to the southeast part of the park. Possible side trip to Scotty's Castle northward, if the roads are open.
- Check out the Charcoal Kilns, the expansive Panamint Valley & 4WD to the infamous Charlie Manson's Cabin.
- On the return trip west, an over night stay in Panamint Springs or even Lone Pine is possible. Fossil Falls off Hwy .395 are worth an hour visit.
