Desert Hot Springs is a good first stop. A relaxing soak in the mineral waters will give you the rejuvinating you need to start the trip off right.
The San Jacinto mountain peak towers above you on the Palm Springs desert floor. A tram ride will take you from 80 to 40 degrees in just a few minutes. Snow is common at the top station & a jacket is always recommended. Driving through the desert communities south on 111.
Take the Palms to Pines Highway 74 west up to Idyllwild and spend a day or two here in this gorgeous little mountain town. Plenty of real Christmas feeling up here with all the decor. Snow is possible so bring the chains.
