Big Sur Walk-In Camp Sites
Coastal walk-in campsites. Large grassy field near coastline where the parking lot is located half mile from camp area. Campers must carry their gear in about 1 mile. Parking can be tight on holiday weeknds or busy summer months. This beach park is popular among backpackers, cyclist, surfers & young people.
It is no surprise to hear a small drum circle or folks sharing live music; the word community is part of the scene. Everyone shares the same large camping area - picnic tables & fire rings alike. Meet your neighbors; Share food if you have extra.
Other non-busy campground options near the Big Sur Coast are - Ponderosa & Nacimiento. Secluded, free camping can be found on the dirt back roads, although some areas might require a high clearance vehicle or 4x4 to reach.

Big Sur Coast Hiking
Grassy wetlands, tide pools, coves & prime coastal access is all within walking distance from your tent. The hike to the large field carrying your gear may be more than you expected. Be ready for a serious walk car campers. Climbing the cliffs & walking the beaches around here should be enough to satify any person seeking some exercise.
There area number of good hikes from this location up the forested hills to the east. Redwood groves, creeks and ranchlands. Big Sur Back Roads, a graded dirt road loops around the mountain range located behind Andrew Molera State Park.

The Big Sur BackRoads page gives you a great idea of what kind of SUV access this back country has. Drive closer to your trailhead or get off the busy coast Pacific Highway 1.
Dirt roads here generally follow the ridge lines (2000-4000' above sea level), or they connect paved roads to the upper routes.
Nacimiento Road will easily access mountain dirt roads, southbound or north. Sykes Hot Springs, Prewitt Ridge, Ventana Wilderness trailheads are all popular destinations within the backcountry.
